PROJECT BACKGROUND

Creekside Open Space

Creekside Open Space is a 3.63-acre property located in Southeast Santa Rosa along Creekside Road between Bethards Drive and Yulupa Avenue. It is mostly wooded with Matanzas Creek within the southern boundary. Current park amenities include three benches, a trash can, two dog waste stations, native oak trees and bird boxes.

Creekside Open Space is one of thirteen open space properties across the City. Open space provides passive recreation, visual enjoyment, conservation, watershed protection and hazard reduction for the citizens of Santa Rosa. These areas have minimal amenities like benches, picnic tables, unpaved trails and trash cans.

Proposed Renaming

In April of 2018, the Board of Community Services (BOCS) received a citizen request to rename Creekside Open Space after Mary M. Traverso. The BOCS recommended staff take the next step in the process towards renaming the Open Space by requesting community input regarding the name change as well as soliciting input on the City’s Park Naming Policy and Procedure.

City Council Policy 000-25: Park Naming Policy and Procedure

City Council Policy 000-25 provides the City with procedures for naming new parks, criteria for changing the name of a park and how to handle donations. The current policy does not provide the necessary guidance the City needs to make meaningful, long-term decisions. The City has embarked on a policy update to create a more useful document and to bring it into alignment with other municipalities.

Creekside is the final renaming request the City will consider until City Council Policy 000-25 is updated and adopted.
