UC San Diego’s track and field team competed in two separate meets on March 13, achieving seven event wins and setting four new school records. The Tritons participated in the Ben Brown Invitational at Cal State Fullerton and the Aztec Coastal Track Classic & Distance Carnival at San Diego State.
The split competition allowed different event groups to showcase their strengths. At Fullerton, Zach Lewis led the field team by winning both the men’s discus with a throw of 54.83 meters—surpassing his own school record—and the men’s shot put with a mark of 16.92 meters. Feyi Olukanni also set a new school record in the women’s shot put, winning with a distance of 15.47 meters.
In jumps, Chidiebere Agunanne won the women’s triple jump with a leap of 12.47 meters, moving up to second all-time at UC San Diego and setting a new stadium record. On the track, the men’s 4×100 meter relay team—composed of Jordan Agbettor, Brandon Orlow, Antrell Harris, and Jack Mullen—set another school record by finishing third with a time of 40.24 seconds.
At San Diego State’s meet, Evan Gardner won the men’s 800 meters in 1:51.50 while Allyson Abandonato claimed victory in the women’s race with a time of 2:06.68, breaking her own school record by over two seconds. Sylvana Northrop secured her second win in as many weeks by taking first place in the women’s 5,000 meters with a time of 16:24.59.
Freshman Bella Di Silvestri finished ninth in pole vault at San Diego State but moved up to fourth all-time in UC San Diego history after clearing 3.82 meters; Chance Rynearson was third among men after clearing 4.88 meters.
The Tritons are scheduled to compete next at UCLA on March 27-28.
