The UC San Diego Tritons track and field team will begin their indoor season at the Nevada Invitational in Reno, Nevada, on January 16-17. The meet will take place at the Reno-Sparks Convention Center, with events starting at 10:00 a.m. each day.

A total of 21 Triton athletes are set to compete this weekend. Among them are returning champions and key contributors from last year’s successful campaign. Tamara Aimufia, who won the women’s long jump at the previous Big West Track & Field Championships, and Feyi Olukanni, winner of the women’s shot put event, both return for another season. Jordyn Thomas is also back after being part of last year’s winning women’s 4x400m relay team.

Five athletes who qualified for the First Round of the 2025 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships will compete again this season: Tamara Aimufia (jumps), Miles Bennett (jumps), Anthony Flowers (sprints), Sylvana Northrop (distance), and Feyi Olukanni (throws).

This is only the second year that UC San Diego has sponsored an indoor track and field program. After competing in Spokane, Washington for the Riverfront Multis from February 5-7, they will return to Reno for the Battle Born Classic from February 13-15.

Looking ahead to postseason competition, the Big West Track & Field Championships are scheduled for May 15-16 at Long Beach State. The heptathlon and decathlon events will be held earlier on May 8-9 at UC Irvine. Last year, UC San Diego’s women finished fifth while the men placed seventh at these championships.

UC San Diego Director of Athletics Earl W. Edwards announced Kim Graham-Miller as head coach on July 11, 2022. “She took over UC San Diego’s men’s and women’s programs after serving as an assistant coach at Sacramento State since 2014, working with relay teams and sprints and hurdles. During her time in Sacramento, she helped coach the Hornets to six Big Sky Conference titles.”

Graham-Miller was a standout athlete at Clemson University before going on to compete internationally. “A 1993 graduate of Clemson University, she was a decorated athlete for the Tigers. The team captain was a three-time ACC Performer of the Year – the only woman to capture that honor three times.” She competed in both indoor and outdoor World Championships in 1995 and earned Olympic gold as part of Team USA’s women’s 4×400 meter relay squad during the Atlanta Games in 1996.

Coach Graham-Miller received further recognition when she was inducted into both Clemson University’s Hall of Fame in 1999 and its Ring of Honor in summer 2024—Clemson’s highest student-athlete distinction.

The Triton mascot draws inspiration from Greek mythology as a demigod associated with power over water—a fitting symbol given UC San Diego’s proximity to the Pacific Ocean and ties with Scripps Institution of Oceanography since adopting it in 1964.

As part of its transition to Division I athletics within The Big West conference, UC San Diego launched “Tritoncast,” a weekly podcast featuring interviews with athletes, alumni, coaches, and administrators about developments within its sports programs. Episodes can be accessed via major podcast platforms or directly through ucsdtritons.com; updates are also available by following @Tritoncast on X.

Fans can follow UC San Diego Track & Field throughout their season via Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), or Instagram using @ucsdtrackfield.

For younger fans up through eighth grade interested in supporting Triton athletics more closely—including access to home games—the Junior Triton Club offers membership benefits such as free admission to athletic events and branded merchandise.

UC San Diego Athletics recently moved into NCAA Division I after decades competing successfully at lower levels—earning multiple national championships across its programs—and maintains one of college athletics’ highest graduation rates among public institutions.
