Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D., a representative for California’s 25th district, has been vocal on social media about recent legislative debates concerning Medicaid. Ruiz has served in Congress since 2013 after succeeding Mary Bono and brings his medical expertise to the forefront of health policy discussions.
On May 14, 2025, Congressman Ruiz posted about an ongoing debate in Congress regarding threats to Medicaid. He highlighted the extended duration of the discussion, stating that “We’ve officially passed the 24-hour mark in this marathon debate over threats to Medicaid.” Ruiz emphasized that the proposed bill would increase healthcare costs for millions of Americans and expressed determination to continue opposing it.
Later that day, he provided an update following the conclusion of the lengthy meeting. In his post at 21:44 UTC, he remarked on the outcome by stating that “26 hours and 30 minutes later, the marathon meeting is over. Sadly, the Republican majority passed their bill with no Democratic support because it strips health care from 13.7 million people.” Despite this setback, Ruiz noted their efforts during the debate and thanked followers for staying informed.
The following day on May 15, Ruiz addressed claims made by Republicans regarding their bill’s impact on traditional Medicaid. At 15:28 UTC, he clarified via social media that “Republicans say their bill won’t touch traditional Medicaid.” However, he argued that significant cuts to Medicaid could lead to increased costs for hospitals and threaten services such as Labor & Delivery and Pediatrics.
Congressman Raul Ruiz was born in Zacatecas City, Mexico in 1972 and currently resides in Indio. He graduated from UCLA with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1994 and continued his education at Harvard University.
