Rep. Mike Levin, who represents California’s 49th district in the U.S. Congress, posted a series of tweets on May 13, 2026, criticizing former President Donald Trump’s economic and energy policies and sharing details about an unannounced visit to a detention center.
In his first post at 17:33 UTC, Levin stated: “NEWS FLASH: To be the ‘most energy affordable nation,’ you actually have to make energy more affordable. Trump’s done the opposite. Despite promising to cut your bills in half, energy costs went up as high as 13% last year on his watch. More than a year in, your bills are”.
An hour later, at 18:31 UTC, Levin continued his criticism of Trump’s administration by writing: “Trump promised to fix the economy. What he actually did was impose illegal tariffs that drove up prices on everything you buy, start an unauthorized war, choke off the labor supply in the middle of a labor shortage, strip millions of Americans of their health care, pressure”.
Later that day at 20:07 UTC, Levin discussed his recent activities regarding immigration oversight: “This week, I made an unannounced visit to the Otay Mesa Detention Center, because the only way to get an honest picture of what’s actually happening inside is to show up without warning. When we asked to speak with detainees, ICE handed us a brand new memo. Until now, detainees”.
Levin has represented California’s 49th District since replacing Darrell Issa in 2019 and currently resides in San Juan Capistrano. He was born in Inglewood in 1978 and holds degrees from Stanford University and Duke University.
