Rep. Mike Levin, U.S. Congressman representing California’s 49th district since 2019, posted a series of tweets criticizing former President Donald Trump and Washington Republicans for their fiscal priorities and approach to congressional oversight.
On May 7, 2026, Levin alleged that Trump misled the public about the funding of a ballroom project, writing: “Trump promised his ballroom wouldn’t cost taxpayers a dime. That was a big fat LIE. If Washington Republicans get their way, you’re on the hook for $1 BILLION for it. That’s $1 BILLION for a ballroom no one wants, yet there is no money for healthcare.”
The following day, May 8, 2026, Levin continued his criticism by referencing presidential pardons related to fraud convictions: “Correct, the American people don’t want someone who supports defrauding them and taking money away from poor kids to give to fraudsters. Your boss has pardoned over 70 people convicted of fraud, making him the most prolific pardoner of fraud in modern presidential history,” he wrote.
Later that same day, Levin addressed what he characterized as selective congressional oversight by Republicans: “Washington Republicans have spent the last year proving that congressional oversight is only a priority when Democrats are in the White House. Now the Trump Administration is quietly prepping staff for Democratic control and oversight after November, because this Republican”
Levin’s remarks come amid ongoing debates in Congress regarding federal spending priorities and executive accountability.
