Rep. Mike Levin, who has represented California’s 49th District in the U.S. Congress since 2019, recently addressed several federal policy issues in a series of posts on social media. Levin, a Stanford and Duke graduate born in Inglewood and currently residing in San Juan Capistrano, focused his comments on education funding, refugee protections, and veterans’ services.
On July 14, 2025, Levin criticized the Trump Administration for withholding funds allocated to San Diego County schools by Congress. He stated: “San Diego County schools currently stand to lose $50 million because the Trump Administration refuses to release funding already allocated by Congress. This is a blatant power grab that hurts our students, educators, and system of checks and balances.”
The following day, July 15, 2025, Levin condemned the administration’s decision regarding Afghan refugees: “The Trump Administration shamefully ended Temporary Protected Status for Afghan refugees, abandoning the allies who served alongside our military and putting them at risk of deportation. The Administration’s claim that Afghanistan is now safe for Taliban dissidents to return is”
Later on July 15, he also commented on budget cuts affecting veterans’ programs at the Department of Veterans Affairs: “DOGE demanded cuts to wasteful spending at the Department of Veterans Affairs. Instead, they cut funding to lifesaving programs. There are plenty of ways we should make our government more efficient, but cutting staff who help our veterans isn’t one of them.”
Levin succeeded Darrell Issa as representative for California’s 49th district in 2019.
