Rep. Mike Levin, who represents California’s 49th district in the U.S. Congress, has recently raised concerns about federal law enforcement spending and agency accountability in a series of posts on his social media account.
On February 2, 2026, Levin posted: “We’re spending more on ICE than every other federal law enforcement agency COMBINED. That’s billions poured into mass enforcement while communities struggle with rising costs and public safety gaps. We CANNOT write yet another blank check to ICE. We need real, enforceable”.
Continuing his commentary on government funding and oversight, Levin wrote on February 3, 2026: “Congress has a duty to fund agencies that protect our communities. We also have a duty to make sure those agencies operate professionally, lawfully, and with appropriate safeguards. I’m very mindful of the real harm a government shutdown would cause, especially for military”.
Levin’s comments reflect ongoing debates in Congress regarding the balance between national security funding and fiscal oversight of agencies such as Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). The issue is particularly relevant amid broader discussions over government shutdowns and their impact on services including those for military personnel.
Levin has represented California’s 49th District since 2019 after succeeding Darrell Issa. He was born in Inglewood, California in 1978 and currently resides in San Juan Capistrano. Levin holds degrees from Stanford University (BA) and Duke University (JD).
