Rep. Mike Levin, a U.S. Congressman representing California’s 49th district since 2019, addressed issues of gun violence and health care affordability in a series of posts on January 8, 2026.
In his first post, Levin commemorated the anniversary of the shooting that injured Congresswoman Gabby Giffords in Tucson. He wrote on January 8: “Fifteen years ago today, Congresswoman Gabby Giffords survived a horrific act of gun violence while serving her community in Tucson, my wife’s hometown. Six people were killed that day, and 13 others were injured. Today, we honor Gabby, her husband Mark, and the victims of that”.
Later that day, Levin turned to economic issues affecting American families. On January 8 he posted: “Republicans have a choice: keep making the affordability crisis worse or join us in lowering costs for working families. They created this mess. They drove health care premiums up and put coverage further out of reach for millions of Americans. Extending the ACA tax credits https://t.co/qHHvuBm1IK”.
By evening, Levin highlighted legislative developments regarding health care access: “Today, after a year of stalling, 17 Washington Republicans finally joined Democrats to extend the ACA tax credits and put the American people first. The House has done its job. Now the Senate needs to step up and do the same. This bill should be brought to the floor and sent to”.
Levin was elected to Congress in 2019 after replacing Darrell Issa as representative for California’s 49th District. Born in Inglewood in 1978 and currently residing in San Juan Capistrano at age 44, Levin holds degrees from Stanford University (BA) and Duke University (JD).
The Affordable Care Act (ACA) tax credits referenced by Levin are designed to make health insurance more affordable for individuals and families by reducing premium costs based on income levels.
