Congressman Raul Ruiz, M.D., representing California’s 25th district since 2013, recently shared his concerns regarding legislative actions affecting healthcare and social assistance programs through a series of tweets. Ruiz, who has been vocal about protecting such programs, provided detailed critiques of recent bills and their potential impacts.
On May 22, 2025, Ruiz questioned the belief that Medicaid cuts would not impact those with private insurance. He explained how hospitals dealing with increased unpaid care could affect everyone financially. In his tweet, he stated: “Think Medicaid cuts won’t affect you because you have private insurance? Think again. When hospitals absorb more unpaid care, everyone feels it.”
Later that day at 1 AM in Washington D.C., Congressman Ruiz described ongoing legislative activities involving the Republicans’ proposed bill as “ugly.” He criticized the efforts to reduce Medicaid and SNAP benefits but reassured constituents of his commitment to defending these programs. His post read: “It’s 1AM in Washington and the Republicans’ ‘Big Ugly Bill’ just got even uglier… I’ll be here as long as it takes to defend these programs that millions rely on.”
Following an overnight debate on May 22, Ruiz expressed strong disapproval after House Republicans passed a bill perceived to cut food assistance and health care while increasing national debt. His reaction was captured in a tweet: “What the hell is wrong with House Republicans?… Slashes food assistance and SNAP… Guts health care and Medicaid for working families… And still adds over $5 trillion to the national debt?”
Raul Ruiz continues to advocate for vulnerable populations amidst legislative changes. Born in Zacatecas City, Mexico in 1972 and now residing in Indio, he graduated from UCLA in 1994 before furthering his education at Harvard University.
